What is a Title tag?
Have you ever visited a website, of course, yes!
On the internet, each webpage of the website has a Title tag that displays the title of that page. In SEO terms, – “A Title tag is an important element of an HTML document and it must be defined to each page”.
Let’s have a look of Title in a webpage.
In this image, see the browser’s tab. Text highlighted by red rectangle is the Title tag of this page. This title appears with the page, Search Engine results, Bowser’s history etc.
Have a look at Search Engine results,

Rules of writing a Title tag
There are some of the important rules/facts about the title tag that you must follow while writing a good and SEO friendly title
1) Basics of Title Tag
- Title text must be written within <title>Title Tex</title> tags.
- Title tag (<title>…</title>) must be written within the Head tag (<head>…</head>) of the webpage.
2) Advance Title Tag rules for SEO purposes
As I have mentioned above, that Search engine displays the Title text with the search results, so title tag must be of optimal title length. So, what should the length of the title text be? – Google recommends and displays 50 to 60 characters of the title text. So, the length of the title should be 50 to 60 characters long. If the length is greater than it, search result truncates it and shows only 50 to 60 characters.
Your main keywords, on which you want to rank the webpage, must be placed within this character length range. But, it will be good for SEO, if you put the main keywords at the beginning of the title text. Try to place keywords once in the Title tag.
For example: If you have an article that contains the information about “selling products online” and you want to rank it on the keywords like “sale product online”, “online product selling” or “product sale online” etc..
These 3 are the targeted keywords and for these keywords following Title texts will be good for SEO
- How to sell a product online (Guide of selling online products)
- How to sell a product online
- Selling product online (Tutorial for product selling)
Above are the samples of Title tags, these Title texts contain the long tail keywords (What is it? We will discuss it in another article), optimal length and title having targeted keywords.
Note:
- Two WebPages must not have the same Title.
- Unknown, default, N/A, page etc must not be used as “Title”

Nah!
No problem, I am telling you…
Readers/visitors or we can say “Traffic” is the most important factor with the website. We create a website, write the content so that people may get benefits from your content.

Answer – Through search engines…
And, if your webpage is not ranking at a higher position, traffic will not derive on your page.
How can you rank a webpage in search engines?
Answer – Through search engine optimization (SEO)
So, the conclusion is this “Your webpage content must be SEO friendly; tags that you have used in the HTML document must be optimized for SEO.”
“Title tag” is the most important factor in Search Engine Optimization” and it has following importance…
1) The title tag is important for Web browsers
In the Web browser, Title is the only things which identify the webpage, it displays the title and logs everything in bookmarks, browsers etc with the title text.
Therefore, a Title tag must be meaning full and descriptive that must define the purpose of the webpage.
2) A title tag is important for search engines
A title tag is important for two purposes for the search engines
- Search engines display the Title in the search result and Reader reads the title first and then click on the link. Therefore, to visit the webpage from search results your Title tag must be optimized, descriptive and meaningful.
- To gain the higher ranking in the search engines, Title tag must be optimized for the SEO, it must meet the Title tag length, keywords must be placed there etc.
Since there are many other factors to rank the webpage, but it is the most important factor that your Title tag must be optimized.
3) It is important for social media sharing
Yes! A Title tag is also important for social media sharing, when we share any webpage to the social media like Facebook, Twitter, Google+ etc, four things are shared 1) Title of the page, 2) Link of the page, 3) Description of the page and 4) any related image of the page.
But, why a title is so important? Because people read the title first and then visits the page. So, while sharing a webpage on the social media, you must confirm that Title is descriptive or not.
How to write a good title for the webpage?
A good and SEO friendly must meet the following rules,
- It must meet the Title Tag length standard
- It must contain the keywords that you are planning to target
- It must not be very short or very long
- It must/should contain the website name (for branding purpose)
- It must be descriptive and meaningful
How to promote brand name (website name) with the title?
After a certain time period, your visitors started searching the topic on the search engines by the brand name (website name).
Example: “What is the switching cost Marketing91”
Here, “Marketing91” is the brand name (website name), it should be anything related to the website name (using space or not, like “Marketing91” or “Marketing 91”) But you must have the same brand name for with all titles.
How to write a brand name with Title?
Writing brand name before the Title is very bad practice for SEO. As I wrote above in the article, that you must use keywords at the beginning of the Title.
Therefore, you can place brand name after the Title by separating it with either hyphen (-) or Pipe (|), again I would say “Keep the same format for all Titles”
Example of Title with the brand name:
1) What is switching cost? – Marketing91
2) What is switching cost? | Marketing91
