Top 10 Valuable Brands in the United Kingdom in 2020

The United Kingdom, or the UK, had been going through a tough phase in 2020. The brand value of the brands in the United Kingdom has dropped 14% from last year and is now at 3.315 trillion US dollars.

The country has been unable to maintain its pace with its counterparts because of its internal issues. The year started with negotiations with the EU for favorable results and continued throughout the year. Moreover, the entry of Covid-19 proved equally turbulent and disastrous. It created havoc and brought down the country’s economy that has seen a year of trauma and various changes.

The brand value of its top 75 brands has seen a downward trend, and as per the recently published reports, the UK brand value has fallen by 13% in the last year and 15% since 2017, which has resulted in a loss of 32 billion US dollars. If compared, the top 100 global brands have shown a growth of 5.9% and are now worth more than 5 trillion US dollars.

Sectors like luxury, automobiles, and retail have taken a hit, whereas food and drink, personal care brands, and entertainment have survived and are currently seeing an upward trend.

1. Vodafone

Vodafone | Most Valuable Brands in the United Kingdom

With a brand value of 23.128 billion US dollars, Vodafone occupies the 1st spot in terms of brand value in the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has also shown a downward trend of 13% in brand value from its last year’s figures.  The British company Vodafone is listed on London Stock Exchange and a secondary listing in Nasdaq.

Although Vodafone occupies the top position in terms of brand value in the UK, its global ranking is 55. The multinational company is associated with the telecom sector and has recorded revenues of 44.974 trillion Euros.  Vodafone has its headquarters based in London and operations in most parts of the world. It owns and operates networks and partner networks in 22 and 48 countries, respectively.

2. HSBC

With a brand value of 18.747 billion US dollars, HSBC occupies the 2nd spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has also shown a downward trend of 19% in brand value from last year’s figures.  The world-renowned brand has posted revenues and assets at 56.1 billion US dollars and 2.715 trillion US dollars, respectively, for 2019.

HSBC Holdings plc is a public company of British origin. It was found in the year 1865 and has headquarters based in London, United Kingdom. It has the distinction of being the largest bank in Europe and holds the 6th position in the world’s largest bank.

The multinational company is associated with financial services and investment banking and offers corporate banking, investment banking, retail banking, private banking, wealth management, etc. The British company has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In October 2020, with a market cap of 66.1 billion Pound HSBC became the 3rd largest listed company on the London Stock Exchange.

3. Shell

With a brand value of 16.129 billion US dollars, Shell occupies the 3rd spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has also shown a downward trend of 22% in brand value from last year’s figures. The brand posted its revenues at 352.106 billion US dollars in 2020.

The public company Royal Dutch Shell was found in the year 1907 and has its registered office and headquarters in London and the Netherlands, respectively. It is associated with the oil and gas industry and deals in petroleum, natural gas, LNG, petrochemicals, and lubricants.

The British-Dutch company has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and secondary listings on New York Stock Exchange and Euronext Amsterdam.

4. BP

BP

With a brand value of 11.093 billion US dollars, BP occupies the 4th spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has also shown a downward trend of 16% in brand value from last year’s figures.  In August 2020, the multinational company posted its revenues at 282.610 US billion dollars.

The British origin BP or The British Petroleum plc was founded in 1909 and has its headquarters in London. It is one of the seven supermajors in the oil and gas industry and deals in petroleum, aviation fuels, motor fuels, and natural gas.  The company operates in areas like exploration and production, distribution and marketing, power generation, refining, and trading.

BP is a public company with a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and secondary listings on the New York Stock Exchange and Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

5. BT

BT

With a brand value of 9.208 billion US dollars, BT occupies the 5th spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has also shown a downward trend of 24% in brand value from last year’s figures.  In 2019, the company posted its revenues at 23.428 billion pounds.

The British company BT Group was found in the year 1846 and has its headquarters at the BT Centre in London. It is a telecommunications company and deals with related products like broadband internet, home security, mobile telephony, fixed-line telephony, digital television, etc.

The public limited company has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and a secondary listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

6. SKY

With a brand value of 8.948 billion US dollars, Sky occupies the 6th spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has also shown a downward trend of 11% in brand value from last year’s figures.

Sky Group Ltd is a British origin company associated with the mass media and telecommunication industry. The conglomerate was founded in the year 1990 and worked from its headquarters located in Isleworth, United Kingdom.

Sky was earlier listed on London Stock Exchange but was removed after becoming a subsidiary of Comcast. Its product and services portfolio includes telephony services, broadband, pay television, satellite, broadcasting, and direct-broadcast satellite.

7. Tesco

With a brand value of 8.491 billion US dollars, Tesco occupies the 7th spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has also shown a downward trend of 7% in brand value from last year’s figures. It has posted revenues and net income at 63.911 billion US pounds and 1.320 billion pounds respectively for 2019.

The British corporation Tesco is a retail giant that was found in the year 1919. By the end of 2019, it had 6,800 outlets in the United Kingdom, Hungary, India, Ireland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

With a market share of 28.4%, Tesco is the UK’s grocery sector market leader. It has convenience shops, superstore, hypermarket, and supermarket in its name where it can sell its products.  The public company has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange.

8. Dove

With a brand value of 6.354 billion US dollars, Dove occupies the 8th spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has also shown a downward trend of 2% in brand value from last year’s figures.

The personal care brand Dove is owned by Unilever, which is a popular British consumer goods company.  It was founded in the year 1957 and, with time, has spread its product presence to one hundred and fifty countries. The brand sells its products for babies, women, and men, and its portfolio includes facial care, hair care, lotions, beauty bars, deodorants, etc.

9. O2

O2

With a brand value of 5.164 billion US dollars, O2 occupies the 9th spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. It has shown a downward trend of 6% in brand value from last year’s figures.

O2 UK, as the name suggests, is a British company that works under its parent company Telefonica. It was founded in the year 1985 and operates from its headquarters in Slough, England. Under an agreement, the company was merged with Virgin Media in May 2020.

The telecommunication company has the distinction of being the 2nd largest mobile network operator in the United Kingdom, with 26.4 million subscribers in February 2020.

10. Barclays

With a brand value of 4.6 billion US dollars, Barclays occupies the 10th spot in terms of brand value in the list of the top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020. The brand has posted revenues and total assets at 21.632 billion pounds and 1.140 trillion pounds, respectively, for 2019.

Barclays plc is a multinational company associated with financial services and investment banking. This British origin company is one of the oldest in its industry as it was founded in the year 1690. It operates from its base in London. The public limited company has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and a secondary listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

Brands that had the means to adapt and change as per the consumer behavior were ultimately the winners this year. Some decided to sit tight and wait for normality, whereas others picked up the mantle thrown at them and moved forward with additional vigor and determination. The top 10 valuable brands in the United Kingdom in 2020 have certainly embraced the available opportunities and, despite setbacks, have continued to walk on the path of progress.
